SIGMA SIGNS PURCHASE AGREEMENT TO CONVERT CLASS 2 VEHICLES FOR ADVANCED DRIVETRAIN TESTING USING ZEV'S ELECTRIFICATION SOLUTION

GILBERT, Ariz., Nov. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Zero Electric Vehicles, Inc., (ZEV) today announced a signed purchase agreement with Sigma Powertrain to convert two Class 2 vehicles using Sigma Powertrain Inc’s, (SIGMA) multi-speed gearbox connected to the Cascadia iM-225 motor for testing and demonstration. This advanced gearbox is designed with a fully integrated CANbus control system to optimize gear ratio performance, low-end torque, and power efficiency through motor RPM range. The motor/gearbox are plumbed for cooling, making the integration identical to ZEV’s existing electrification drivetrain.
“ZEV and Sigma provide an immediate sustainable alternative to waiting for OEMs to deliver! We can start your electrification journey now leveraging SIGMA’s innovative clutch design which provides us the ability to address higher gross vehicle weight (GVW) applications for our clients. ZEV is currently working on heavier Class 3 vehicles and some Class 4 applications, whereas this gearbox package will produce predictable and reliable performance across a wide-range of environmental and elevation conditions,” said Jay Ennesser, ZEV SVP of Sales.
ZEV<>SIGMA will offer this solution as part of ZEV’s ATHENA product line, focusing on affordable, fast turnaround vehicle powertrain conversions to meet near-term sustainability goals. This new drivetrain will not affect ZEV vehicle turnaround time, and the ZEV<>SIGMA engineering teams are working closely on the firmware and software control interfaces to support legacy shifter controls from existing vehicle platform. This will include paddle shift control when applicable (new model year Sprinter and Ford), and this will enable the driver to manually control and hold gear settings as required by load or elevation.
“The ATHENA product line from ZEV<>SIGMA provides a refreshing performance upgrade for last mile delivery vehicles. Fleet operators will be pleased to use an optimized all-electric powertrain that can climb grades and hit highway speeds. Multi-ratio EV powertrains are the future of electric commercial trucks,” said Jimmy Moore of Sigma Powertrain.
ZEV<>SIGMA advanced drivetrain will be in production by January 2022. The benefits will impact all vehicle types, including heavier payload and bucket style vehicles. Improvements include vehicle range for both urban and highway driving, higher gradeability, better acceleration from lower speeds, and ability to manually hold gears using existing in-vehicle gear shift method.

The 2021 Joint Electrification Forecast report also contains charts and analysis detailing factors impacting EV adoption; key growth contributors to the aftermarket; trajectory of EV model availability in North America; forecasted performance of EV models relative to other segments; projected share of EVs in car parc for 2021-2045; projected market growth through 2045; new growth opportunities for categories of service; and more.
“We are looking at evolution, not revolution, said Paul McCarthy, president and CEO, AASA. “While EV replacement parts sales will double in size between now and 2025, and again between 2025 and 2030, EVs still have a long road before they account for a large percentage of aftermarket sales.”
“Given we already have a fleet of over 280 million vehicles, our industry will be driven by the internal combustion engine for the next couple of decades,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO, Auto Care Association.
Research and analysis in the 2021 Joint Electrification Forecast report was contributed by Strategy&, the strategy division of PwC; IHS Markit, IMR Inc.; Schwartz Advisors; and YCP Solidiance.

The 32-page 2021 Joint E-commerce Trends and Outlook Forecast report includes:

  • A consolidated view of the e-commerce growth through the year 2025 covering e-tailers from AutoZone to O’Reilly to Walmart;
  • How quickly the e-commerce market will grow year-over-year through 2025;
  • E-commerce penetration growth in the automotive aftermarket for U.S. consumers, and how it compares across industries;
  • Exploration of the differing online purchasing behaviors by generation and demographic; and
  • The impact of COVID-19 as an accelerant to e-commerce adoption.
E-commerce adoption has grown from 6.5% in 2018 to 12.1% in 2021, representing nearly a 100% increase. The 2021 Joint E-commerce Trends and Outlook Forecast report also contains graphs and analysis detailing consumer trends driving e-commerce growth; how to reach the online aftermarket consumer; the state of the automotive aftermarket; and more.
“We saw the value of aftermarket products sold through e-commerce hit nearly $32 billion in 2020, and this number is growing for 2021,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO, Auto Care Association. “E-commerce growth across all retail providers and marketplaces will hit $47 billion by 2025.”
“This study is the only place you will find this detailed forecast of consolidated e-commerce sales,” said Paul McCarthy, president and CEO, AASA.
Research and analysis in the 2021 Joint E-commerce Trends and Outlook Forecast report was contributed by Jefferies, GCommerce, Hedges & Company, IHS Markit, IMR Inc., and M Science.

Auto Care Association and AASA release two new automotive aftermarket reports providing forecasts and analysis of new technologies impacting the industry

Sept. 23, 2021 – FROM AAALIVING – Concern for the environment and lower long-term costs has led millions of Americans to say they’d be likely to consider an electric car for their next automotive purchase. But many still have serious questions about how making the switch would impact their routine—and their wallets.
Here are facts to help you better understand how electric vehicles (EVs) can affect your bank account and the environment, and what to consider if you’re thinking about getting one.

How far can an EV go on a charge?

Most EVs can run about 200 miles on a single charge. In comparison, a typical gas-powered vehicle has a range of 400 to 500 miles on a tank of gas. However, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, U.S. drivers travel an average of 31 miles per day.
Electric vehicle consideration: Do you plan to use it for commuting or long distances? It’s best to find an electric car with an operating range that exceeds your expected use. EV range is reduced by 41% when temperatures drop to 20 F and the car’s heater is used, and by 17% when they rise to 95 F and the car’s air conditioning is used, according to AAA research.
How long does it take to charge a battery?
The short (and unhelpful) answer: It depends. Recharging a depleted battery with household current can take 12 hours or more—a problem if you’re in a hurry but not if you simply charge the vehicle overnight. Many public chargers are faster, with some able to replenish half of the battery’s range in less than an hour.
Electric vehicle consideration: Are you willing to upgrade your electric service at home to support faster charging? And what is the availability of charging stations where you typically drive? There were more than 43,000 EV charging stations in the United States as of summer 2021—but only about 5,000 were fast charging stations, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Availability varies widely by state, but you can find charging station locations through the AAA Mobile app (see them at the Near Me map filter). One other thing to know: AAA Roadside Assistance is beginning to offer charging capability on its vehicles in some cities and states—so a recharge could be as close as your phone.

Are EVs affordable to buy?

EVs start at a little more than $30,000; high-end EVs can run to six figures. But be sure to check for federal, state and local incentives, which can bring down the price.
Electric vehicle consideration: Think about friends and family who own EVs and talk to them about the experience. AAA surveyed EV owners and found that:
  • 96% of respondents said they would buy or lease another EV.
  • 43% said they drove more now than they did with a gas-powered vehicle.
  • 78% reported also having a gas-powered vehicle in their household, but they said they did most of their driving (87%) in their EV.

Are maintenance costs higher for EVs than for gas-powered vehicles?

No. AAA research from 2019 indicates that although the overall cost of EV ownership1 is 8% more than gas-powered vehicle ownership (because of higher depreciation and finance costs), some individual expenses are substantially lower.
The cost of electricity to drive 15,000 miles a year averages $546; the cost of gas to drive the same distance is $1,225.
Electric vehicles don’t require oil changes or engine air filter replacements. If an EV is maintained according to automaker recommendations, it costs $949 annually to maintain, $330 less than a gas-powered car.

Are electric vehicles really that green?

Total emissions associated with driving EVs are still typically less than those for gasoline-powered cars.
Although EVs produce zero direct emissions, emissions may be produced by the source of their electrical power, such as a power plant, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Conventional vehicles, on the other hand, produce direct emissions through the tailpipe, through evaporation from the vehicle’s fuel system and during the fueling process.
You can estimate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with charging and driving an electric vehicle where you live by visiting this calculator from the U.S. Department of Energy.

>President Joe Biden loves electric cars. Whether he’s zipping around a racetrack in Ford’s electric F-150 truck or promising that half of all cars sold in the U.S. will be electric or plug-in hybrids by 2030, the 46th president has made it clear that he wants to break the country’s addiction to gas-powered vehicles.
There’s a very solid reason for that: Today, less than 1 percent of the country’s 250 million cars, trucks, and vans are electric. If America is going to zero out its carbon emissions, that number has to go to 100 percent in just a few decades.
The good news is that Congress is poised to make it way, way easier for Americans to give up their gas cars for smooth, silent, all-electric ones. Last week, the White House released a framework for the Build Back Better Act, the $1.85 trillion budget bill that will also be the largest climate measure in American history. And nestled in the framework is a gangbusters improvement to the nation’s EV tax credits that could nudge millions of Americans to swap out their 2005 Honda Civic for a brand-new Nissan Leaf.
America has had EV tax credits since the presidency of George W. Bush, though they came with some caveats. In the current system, purchasers of a new EV or plug-in hybrid car get up to $7,500 off of their income taxes, with the amount scaled based on the size of the car’s battery. But the credits are non-refundable, meaning that if you don’t have $7,500 in tax liability — i.e., if you make less than about $66,000 a year — you won’t get the full credit. That has resulted in quite a few disappointed and confused EV buyers. There are also only a set number of credits available for each automaker; Tesla and General Motors, for example, have already used up all their available credits.

GILBERT, Ariz., Sept. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — ZEV today announced plans to complete buildout of their new 103,000-square foot, state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle manufacturing facility in Gilbert, AZ to better serve their electrification solutions for light and medium duty fleet vehicles. The company is targeting a movein date of December 01, 2021.
ZEV has worked extensively with EastGroup Properties to architect the facility and production workflow to maximize space and power utilization, while delivering an innovative and modern work experience for ZEV employees, contractors and partners.
“We are thrilled that ZEV have selected Gilbert Crossroads for their new headquarters and look forward to welcoming them to their new state-of-the art manufacturing facility in December,” said Mike Sacco, Vice President, EastGroup Properties. EastGroup Properties is the owner and developer of the four-building 318,000 square foot Gilbert Crossroads Business Park.
ZEV’s location is strategically positioned to capitalize on their partnership with Arizona State University (ASU) to build on their incredible talent pool while developing new relationships with Grand Canyon University (GCU) and Maricopa County Community Colleges. “ZEV values the incredible talent coming through these college programs, we have over four graduates with patent filings in less than 6 months of development – that is rapid innovation,” said Jim Maury, ZEV President.
ZEV will be expanding their fleet vehicle conversion production to 40 vehicles per day by Spring of 2022. This expansion will deliver over 300 new jobs to the city of Gilbert and surrounding area. ZEV has allocated 10K square feet to accelerate battery module design, development, certification and assembly to support fleet and passenger vehicle applications. This will bring high tech jobs, with expertise in battery cell chemistries, packaging, thermal management, and control interfaces to maximize energy density, configurability and safety through the vehicle lifecycle.
“It’s with great excitement that we Welcome ZEV to Gilbert in their new 103,000 SQ FT stand-alone location on Germann Road! ZEV plans to hire 300 local employees over the next 12 months. We are grateful that ZEV chose Gilbert and thrilled for them to add to Gilbert’s thriving business community,” said Mayor Brigette Peterson, Gilbert City.

August 5, 2021 - President Joe Biden announced Thursday that by 2030, half of all vehicles sold in the United States will be battery electric, fuel cell electric, or plug-in hybrid.

In addition to members of the United Auto Workers Union, Biden signed the executive order at the White House. According to a joint statement from the three automakers, the automakers “shared aspiration” that 40-50 percent of their cars sold by 2030 will be electric vehicles.
Biden said the future of American car manufacturing lies in electric vehicles while speaking on the South Lawn of the White House. “is electric and there’s no turning back.” “The question is whether we’ll lead or fall behind in the race for the future,” Biden added.
President Biden made repeated references to the importance of assuring that electric vehicles and the batteries that power them are produced in the United States by union workers.
Trump-era fuel-emissions standards are also being restored, according to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation. 2023 model year vehicles will have standards that are 10 percent stricter than those in place under Trump’s administration, with standards increasing by 5 percent annually through 2026 model year vehicles.
The current mileage standard is 43.3 miles per gallon. The proposed emissions standard for 2026 is 52 miles per gallon. Under Obama administration rules, the standard for 2026 was set at 50.8 miles per gallon.

Zero Electric Vehicles, Inc. (ZEV), today announced their first Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 electric vehicle conversion was certified by the State of Arizona as a qualified zero-emissions vehicle.

TEMPE, Ariz., July 22, 2021 (Newswire.com) – Zero Electric Vehicles, Inc. (ZEV), a rapid innovator of electrification solutions, today announced their first Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 electric vehicle conversion was certified by the State of Arizona as a qualified zero-emissions vehicle. ZEV is moving to production with their Class 2/3 fleet vehicle conversions to a full battery electric powertrain with a range of 130-150 miles, and Level 2 and optional Level 3 onboard fast charger.

ZEV’s proprietary powertrain configuration enables a new path to electrification via rapid conversion of diesel and gas cargo and passenger vehicles to 100% electric with no change to vehicle weight distribution or payload capacity. This Conversion Kit is currently available for the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500/3500 Cargo and Passenger Vans and is now being extended to the Ford Transit and other vehicle types.
“ZEV’s Commercial Conversion kit rapidly converts fleet vehicles to a full electric powertrain in less than one day to minimize fleet vehicle downtime and eliminates over 18,000 lbs of CO2 emissions from a diesel conversion per year,” said Darren Elliott, ZEV SVP of Operations.
Combined with this incredible milestone, ZEV was selected as a Qualified Service Provider of Fleet Electrification Assessment services by the Salt River Project (SRP), one of the largest utility companies in the U.S. “The SRP Electrification Qualified Service Provider (eQSP) program is designed to allow trained vendors, like Zero Electric Vehicles (ZEV), to study electrification opportunities and develop a roadmap to convert customer’s fleet to electric. Switching to electric equipment can benefit municipalities, manufacturers, transportation and warehouse operations, grocery and foodservice providers, retailers and other businesses,” said Billy Vaughan of ICF and Program Administrator for the SRP Business EV Charging Program.
ZEV understands the challenges faced by organizations in determining the way forward to an electric future. Finding the right balance between economic investments in electrification and meeting sustainability goals is a complex process requiring insight across all aspects of electrification (infrastructure, chargers, vehicles, training, maintenance/support, data services, and incentives/credits). Through the SRP-sponsored eQSP program, fleet operators obtain an overall assessment of their timeline, vehicle types, quantities, charge stations, and required infrastructure to make the transition.
“ZEV’s commitment to a Zero-Emission future is evident by our rapid development and pre-production delivery of the Class 2/3 fleet vehicle electrification solution; we are actively engaged with fleet customers to assess fleet operations through our SRP partnership and accelerate their journey to a zero-emission operation,” said Jim Maury, ZEV President.
